Uganda pulled off a 19-5 win over Kenya in the first leg of the Elgon Cup at the Kyadondo grounds in Kampala on Saturday. This match also doubled up as a Victoria Cup fixture.Tries by Romano Ogwal and Justin Kimono and three Anthony Kinene penalites ensured Uganda go into the second leg next Saturday in Nairobi holding a fourteen point advantage.
Kinene gave Uganda the lead on nine minutes, drilling over a penalty. They would pile more pressure but winger Jonathan Onen and Kenyan born George Scot Oluoch dropped the ball on the try line.
Kenya halfbacks Kenny Andola and Eden Agero also missed penalties in the final minutes of the first half before Kinene kicked home a second penalty that gave Uganda 6-0 lead at the break.
Second half action saw Onen releasing Ogwal to touch down on fourth three minutes before Kinene added a penalty that took the scores to 14-0.
Kenya were still in this match, their pressure paying off when number eight Lawi Buyachi grounded the ball, cutting the deficit to 14-5. Justin Kimono, top try scorer at the 2011 Bamburi Rugby Super Series stretched Uganda’s lead with a late try as the game ended 19-5 in the hosts’ favour.
Earlier, Kenya’s women fell to a 15-6 defeat to Uganda in the Women’s Elgon Cup match played at the same venue. Charlotte Mudoola, Winnie Atyang and Rosenberg Kanyunyuzi scored Uganda’s tries while Janet Owino scored Kenya’s six points
