The Semi Final Preview

Twelve matches later and we are down to the final four at the 10th edition of the Bamburi Rugby Super Series. This year, the semi finals adopt a slight different structure. Contrary to previous years where both semi final matches were played at Nairobi’s RFUEA grounds, this year’s edition sees the semi final fixtures evenly spread between Nairobi and Kampala, adding a different twist to what are already intriguing fixtures, at least on paper. The four teams in action this weekend are the Lions, UAP Rhinos, Dimension Data Rwenzori and the SDV Transami Cheetahs.
We begin our preview in Nairobi where the 2008 champions Lions host the defending champions UAP Rhinos at the RFUEA grounds.

Lions v UAP Rhinos
Saturday 26 May 2012
RFUEA Grounds, Nairobi
4.00pm
Gate Charges Ksh 300

The last time these two sides met was in a Pool B fixture on Saturday 14 May 2011 at the Afraha Stadium in Nakuru, the Rhinos beating the Lions 24-19 to book a semi final berth and send the big cats home. The Lions came through Pool A unscathed, finishing top courtesy of wins over the Coastal Bulls, Nguvu Sharks and the SDV Transami Cheetahs. Their reward for their table topping exploits? A semi final match up against the UAP Rhinos. They have been efficient in the run up to the semis, the leadership of Dennis Mwanja and Collins Injera complimented by the goal kicking exploits of Fabian Olando, Lavin Asego’s playmaking skills and Peter Mutai’s control and decision making when distributing ball from the set pieces and breakdowns.

They have managed to score an average of 28 points per game, conceding an average of 10 points per game, which tells a story about their offensive and defensive capabilities. This however is a winner take all scenario, and such situations have in the past proved to be no respecter of statistics. Lions coach Meli Wanibuli welcomes back Joseph Oriwo, Dennis Ombachi and Danny Sikuta who were part of the Kenyan team that reached the Roma Sevens final in Italy but will have to do without back row man Anthony Ogot who starts a one match ban after being cited following an incident during last weekend’s group game against the Cheetahs.
Action from last weekend between the Rhinos and Buffaloes

Last week, for a moment, Erick Situma’s Rhinos, five time winners of the Bamburi Rugby Super Series were on the opposite end of the scoreline against the Mumias Sugar Buffaloes during their final Pool B match at the Nakuru Athletic Club, rallying from an 18-15 score at half time to edge the plucky Buffaloes 25-18 and set up Saturday’s date with the Lions by virtue of finishing second in their pool. Admittedly, the Rhinos, five time champions, were slow off the mark in that one, but it sure served as a wake up call and they definitely take the game to the Lions as they seek to return to the finals for a sixth successive time since 2007. They have managed an average of 27 points per game, conceding an average of 14 points per game.

They will rely on the boot and playmaking of Eden Agero, the versatile half back comfortable playing at either nine or ten, loose forward Brian Nyikuli, Edwin Makori and Victor Sudi to carry them on the day. Dennis Muhanji was taken off during their match against the Buffaloes and is doubtful for this fixture as is scrum half Edwin Achayo.

A few match ups that should light up the match will be the front battle between Joel Ng’ang’a and Moses Amusala, Wilson Kopondo against Danny Sikuta at lock, Dennis Mwanja against Brian Nyikuli at back row, Peter Mutai probably up against Eden Agero or Edwin Achayo at number nine, Victor Sudi versus Collins Injera on the wing.

It goes without saying the fans at the RFUEA grounds have a match on their hands

Dimension Data Rwenzori v SDV Transami Cheetahs
Kampala Rugby Grounds, Kampala, Uganda
4.00pm

Hosts Dimension Data Rwenzori host the SDV Transami Cheetahs in a ground breaking match, ground breaking because this is the first ever BRSS semi final fixture being played outside its traditional venue at Nairobi’s RFUEA grounds. Rwenzori won Pool B with a 100% record, posting wins over the Mumias Sugar Buffaloes, the UAP Rhinos and local rivals KCB Victoria. Playing in Kampala, Rwenzori will not only look to home ground advantage but also the free scoring Steve Ogwete, current joint top try scorer with the Buffaloes Bram Shikanda on four tries, Anthony Kinene, Marvin Odongo and Justin Kimono will also be key for Rwenzori as they seek to go where no Ugandan side has gone by reaching a first ever Bamburi Rugby Super Series final.

The SDV Transami Cheetahs, champions in 2004 and 2006 were second in Pool A behind the Lions, winning two and losing one of their three pool fixtures. They make the journey to Kampala looking to return to a third successive final since 2010. Vincent Mose is their leading try and points scorer and will be key to the side’s success in Kampala. Kenya number eight Lawi Buyachi will also be a vital player for the Cheetahs who will whoever have to do without winger Les Ochieng who is banned for the rest of the tournament after being found guilty of stamping Lions winger Darwin Mukidza last weekend.

As mentioned earlier, Rwenzori will bank on their good run, and home ground advantage as they dream of making the trip to Nairobi to compete for the 2012 Bamburi Rugby Super Series crown but must be wary of the Cheetahs, beaten finalists the past two years. Kampala fans are in for a quality game of rugby.

Olando leads points scorers heading into semis

Fabian Olando
Lions utility back Fabian Olando now leads the points scorers charts after match day three at the 10th edition of the Bamburi Rugby Super Series. Olando, playing in his third BRSS, has accumulated 34 points coming off one try, seven conversions and five penalties. His career BRSS points tally since his first appearance in 2010 is 52 points.Vincent Mose of the SDV Transami Cheetahs is placed second with 27 points coming off two tries, seven conversions and one penalty. Dimension Data Rwenzori’s Anthony comes in third on 24 points courtesy of six penalties and four conversions while Eden Agero (UAP Rhinos) and George Oduor (Mumias Sugar Buffaloes) are joint fourth on 21 points, both having slotted home six conversions and three penalties.

The tournament’s top try scorers Steve Ogwete (Dimension Data Rwenzori) and Bramwell Shikanda (Mumias Sugar Buffaloes) lie fifth on the overall points standings with 20 points coming off a tournament leading four tries. KCB Victoria’s Philip Wokorach is sixth with 16 points, having scored two conversions, one drop goal and three penalties.

Marvin Odongo (Dimension Data Rwenzori), Edwin Salamba (Nguvu Sharks) and Wilson Kopondo (UAP Rhinos) have all touched down thrice, their 15 points placing them joint seventh on the overall points scorers chart.

Match Day Three Preview

Match Day three at the 10th edition of the Bamburi Rugby Super Series takes place on Saturday 19 May 2012 with four matches on the cards. There will be two Pool A fixtures at Nairobi’s Jamhuri Park, and two other Pool B fixtures in the Kenyan Central Rift Valley town of Nakuru and the Ugandan captial Kampala.

Action from match day two

We start our BRSS match day three preview in Nairobi.

The already eliminated duo of Nguvu Sharks and the Coastal Bulls face off in the day’s opening fixture at the Jamhuri Park from 2.00pm, East African Time. The Nguvu Sharks 2012 campaign came to a halt when they succumbed to a second straight loss to the Lions on match day two, the 15-8 result meaning Paul Odera’s charges would not be returning to the semi finals.

The Sharks will come into this fixture playing for pride, looking to end their 2012 Bamburi Rugby Super Series campaign on a high. For the Coastal Bulls, their sophomore campaign has seen them grow in leaps and bounds. While they are yet to win a BRSS match to date, the experience they have picked up is nothing short of valuable. Bearing that in mind, they will definitely come all out against the Sharks, hoping to pull off a favorable result.

The already qualified duo of the SDV Transami Cheetahs and the Lions meet in the 4.00pm kick off at Jamhuri Park. Having won their opening two matches against the Bulls and Sharks in particular order, and creating an unassailable lead between them and the rest of the pack,it is a given that both teams have made it to the BRSS semi finals but this doesn’t water down the significance of this tie. Qualifying top of Pool A will be key for both sides, and this is very likely to influence team selection with either side’s technical bench putting out their strongest available sides. This should be an closely contested encounter, the team that emerges victorious here is a sure bet to make it all the way to the championship match on Saturday 2 June 2012 at the RFUEA grounds.

Shifting our focus to Pool B and the top of the bill clash is what is being refered to in Uganda as ” the BRSS true clash of the titans” pitting KCB Victoria against Dimension Data Rwenzori at the Kyadondo Rugby grounds from 4.00pm East African Time. Victoria bounced back from their match day one 46-9 defeat to the UAP Rhinos in Nairobi by registering a 17-7 away win over the Mumias Sugar Buffaloes in Mumias on match day two. With their noses scenting a semi final berth, Herbert Wafula’s will leave nothing to chance against fierce rivals Rwenzori. Faisal Gamma and youngster Philip Wokorach will be some of the players to watch on the Victoria side.

Fresh from breaking the UAP Rhinos three year, 16 match unbeaten BRSS run with that 17-15 win on match day two,Dimension Data Rwenzori could statistically have done everything to book their semi final berth, but they would probably have to wary of the phrase, “it ain’t over till its over.” A whole combination of factors could see them not make it beyond the group stages. Bearing this in mind, they should come full throttle against their countrymen, looking to not only retain local bragging rights for the next twelve months but most importantly earn the chance to play their semi final encounter at home and the only way to achieve this is by, you guessed it, beating Victoria.

Steve Ogwete has been in fine form for Rwenzori, his tournament leading four tries part of the reason his side lead Pool B and he will be expected to replicate this form on Saturday. Justin Kimono, if selected, will make his eighth BRSS appearance since his debut late as he seeks to add to his BRSS career tally of six tries. It will be interesting to see how he does on Saturday, particularly as he seeks to outshine his fellow youngster Philip Wokorach on the Victoria side.

All in all this should be a battle royale.

The last fixture on the day is the 4.30pm Pool B kick off at the Nakuru Athletic Club where hosts and defending champions UAP Rhinos play the visiting Mumias Sugar Buffaloes in the 60th match since the tournament’s inception in 2003. The Rhinos mission in Nakuru is straightforward, registering a win as they seek to earn qualification from Pool B, anything short of this complicates their onward movement and it would take a lot of phone calls, text messages and calculators to collect results from elsewhere and do the math to determine their fate. The Rhinos will be motivated to win and for good reason. They will seek to bounce back from the 17-15 loss to Rwenzori in Kampala, a result that saw them lose a BRSS match for the first time since the 33-9 loss to the Lions in the 2008 final. The champions must reassert themselves

Already out of contention after losing their opening two pool matches, the Buffaloes head to Nakuru looking to play the spoiler. They have shown glimpses of brilliance and will look to burst into life against the Rhinos. They will dig deep for the self belief to pull it off and end their official interest in the BRSS on a high.

In other Bamburi Rugby Super Series news, there will be a CSR activity at the National Spinal Injury Hospital on Sunday 20 May 2012 from 1.00pm. The exercise will entail a visit by members of the BRSS Organizing Committee, tournament sponsors ,players and representatives from the various franchises as well as wellwishers interested in being part of this activity. English Counties squad to tour Uganda and Kenya named

    STORY COURTESY OF BEDFORD TODAY
The England Counties’ 26-man squad for next month’s three match tour to Uganda and Kenya has been named.

Eleven counties and 15 clubs are represented within the squad which contains 12 debutants.

Rob Baldwin will captain the tour party, having led the side to a 34-16 victory over the Counties’ Irish counterparts, the Ulster Bank International Team, in March.

Nine other players featured in the spring international, whilst Jim Wigglesworth steps up after impressing for the England Counties U20s earlier this month.

The England Counties squad is the representative flagship of the county and community game and since being founded in 2002 has visited North and South America, Europe and the Far East.

Nine players have previous touring experience but the side will be treading new ground when they head to the African continent.

The squad assembles on June 1 and the 17-day tour incorporates the largest tour outreach programme ever undertaken.

Working with the Tag Rugby Trust, the squad and management will carry out frequent coaching sessions and visits, aiming to raise the profile of rugby and leave a lasting legacy for the host unions.

The squad plays both Uganda and a combined East Africa side in Kampala before taking on the challenge of an East Africa Invitation XV in Nairobi.

Team Manager Michael Old said: “Selection has been particularly tough this year as the quality of players making themselves available for the County Championship continues to improve but we are very pleased with the final line-up.

“Squad flexibility was a key consideration particularly in the specialist roles of prop, hooker and scrum-half.

“In the event of injury or illness we will not be able to fly replacements out so it was important to have experience across positions.

“Props Jared Saunders and David Dickinson have played at hooker while hooker, Joe Bonner can switch to prop, and Jack Smales, a wing/full-back, has played regularly at scrum-half.

“I would like to offer my congratulations to the players on their selection and as with all ECXV tours it is hugely exciting to get a new group of players together to see what they can produce on the pitch.

“I would expect this squad to continue England Counties proud tour record and recent run of victories.

“The Ugandan and Kenyan Rugby Unions are looking forward to the prospect of having an England team on their soil.

“During a recent visit, we saw the pace, skill and commitment of the countries’ players and they will be highly motivated to perform against us.

“The squad will be faced with playing challenges very different to their club and county games and the unpredictability of the opposition is one of the most exciting elements of touring for both players and coaches.

“During the recce we also visited some of the schools and orphanages that we are going to be working with, together with the Tag Rugby Trust charity, and I am confident it will be a very rewarding and humbling experience for all involved as we make a positive impact on our East African hosts both on and off the pitch.”

Squad: Rob Baldwin (Wharfedale & Yorkshire), Joe Bonner (Blackheath & Kent), Richard Boyle (Newcastle Falcons & Northumberland), James Cleverly (Blackheath & Kent), David Dickinson (Tynedale & Northumberland), Billy Johnson (Unattached & Hertfordshire), James Lindfield (Westcombe Park & Kent), Dave Marwick (Stockport & Cheshire), Louis McGowan (Sedgley Park & Lancashire), Ben Pons (Moseley & North Mids), Gareth Rawlings (Fylde & Lancashire), Jared Saunders (Saracens & Hertfordshire), Craig Voisey (Moseley & North Mids), Sam Wilkes (Cinderford & Gloucestershire), Chris Briers (Fylde & Lancashire), Will Burton (Luctonians & North Mids), Phil Chesters (Ealing & Devon), Steve Hamilton (Unattached & Yorkshire), Peter Hodgkinson (Ealing & Cheshire), Toby Howley-Berridge (Unattached & Eastern Counties), Stefan Liebenberg (Bedford & Hertfordshire), Harry Peck (Tynedale & Northumberland), Jack Smales (Nevers & Northumberland), Rory Teague (Cinderford & Gloucestershire), Tom Wheatcroft (Ealing & Warwickshire), Jim Wigglesworth (Hull & Yorkshire).

Ogwete, Olando lead scorers charts after match day two

With the statistics from match day two in, Dimension Data Rwenzori’s Steve Ogwete is perched atop the try scorers chart at the 10th edition of the Bamburi Rugby Super Series with four tries, one ahead of Bramwell Shikanda from the Mumias Sugar Buffaloes.

Marvin Odongo (Dimension Data Rwenzori), Edwin Salamba (Nguvu Sharks), Brian Nyikuli, Edwin Makori (UAP Rhinos), Dennis Ombachi, Dan Sikuta (Lions) and Tony Nyandigisi (SDV Transami Cheethas) have scored two tries each.

Twenty four other players have scored one try each.

    Points scorers

Ogwete is also joint top points scorer after two rounds of the BRSS, his four tries accounting for 20 points. He shares this position with the Lions’ Fabian Olando whose 20 points have come off one try, six conversions and a penalty.

Vincent Mose from the SDV Transami Cheetahs is on 17 points, courtesy of one try and six conversions.

Philip Wokorach (KCB Victoria) and Eden Agero (UAP Rhinos) are tied on 16 points. Wokorach has managed two conversions, a drop goal and three penalties while Agero kicked over five conversions and two penalties.

Shikanda also places fourth on the overall points scorers charts courtesy of his hat trick of tries against Rwenzori on match day one that sees him accumulate 15 points. He is followed in fifth place by his team mate George Oduor whose 13 points have come off five conversions and a penalty.

    Other interesting statistics

Dimension Data Rwenzori’s 17-15 win over the UAP Rhinos was their first ever win over the Rhinos. It was also the Rhinos first defeat in 16 previous BRSS matches stretching back to their 2008 defeat to the Lions in the final, a match that they lost 33-9.

After match day two, 46 tries, 32 conversions, 3 drop goals and 12 penalty goals have been scored.

The match between the UAP Rhinos and the Mumias Sugar Buffaloes taking place at the Nakuru Athletic Club at 4.30pm on Saturday 19 May 2012 will be the 60th match since the inception of the Bamburi Rugby Super Series in 2003.

Pieces falling into place after match day two action

The pieces are seemingly falling in place after match day two at the 10th edition of the Bamburi Rugby Super Series. The SDV Transami Cheetahs and the Lions have come good from a Pool A that on paper looked like being the pool of death. The Cheetahs overcame the Nguvu Sharks 11-7 on match day one at the RFUEA grounds, following this up with a 50-10 demolition of the Coastal Bulls when the tournament shifted location to the Jamhuri Park on match day two. The Lions started their campaign with a 45-6 win away to the Bulls on match day one, following this up with a gutsy 15-8 win over the Sharks.

Action between the Nguvu Sharks and the Lions

The two wins on the trot saw the big cats each accumulate nine points, an unassailable lead but this doesn’t water down the significance of their clash next weekend at the Jamhuri Park when winning the group and landing a “favorable” semi final draw will be on the agenda. The Nguvu Sharks, semi finalists in 2011 will now play for pride when they host the Coastal Bulls.

Dimension Data Rwenzori finally succeeded where many had failed, beating a UAP Rhinos side that was undefeated in BRSS since their 33-9 loss to the Lions in the 2008 final. The 17-15 Pool B win for Rwenzori not only ended the Rhinos sixteen match unbeaten run, a streak that had seen them win the tournament three years in succession between 2009 and 2011, but also ensured that this pool remained wide open, with three teams, including KCB Victoria who beat the Mumias Sugar Buffaloes 17-7 in Mumias, still in contention for semi final qualfication.

The Mumias Sugar Buffaloes started the tournament with a 43-31 loss to Dimension Data Rwenzori in Kampala,a match in which they rallied late, reducing the deficit to twelve points, a result that had many of their supporters hoping that this could be the year they went past the group stages. This was not the case as they went down to a home defeat, losing 17-7 to the visiting KCB Victoria from Uganda. All but knocked out of the tournament, the Buffaloes travel to Nakuru on match day three, playing for pride and looking to ruin the Rhinos chances of making the BRSS last four.

The action continues on Saturday 19 May 2012 with matches in Nairobi, Nakuru and Kampala. The match day three previews will be released in subsequent bulletin

The SDV Transami Cheetahs and the Lions become the first teams to qualify for the semi finals of the 10th edition of the Bamburi Rugby Super Series after winning their second group matches on Saturday 12 May 2012 at the Jamhuri Park in Nairobi.
    Pool A
The Cheetahs, leading 26-0 at half time, ran off with a 50-10 win over visiting Coastal Bulls, scoring eight tries and six conversions. Anthony Nyandigisi landed two tries while Kelvin Omiyo, Oscar Ayodi, Frank Ndong, Sidney Asamba, Vincent Mose and Augustine Lugonzo scored a try each. Mose added six conversions.
The Bulls responded with a Steve Matioli try and Marlon Ondiege’s penalty and conversion.
The second match saw the Lions register a 15-8 win over the Nguvu Sharks. Dennis Mwanja’s early try, converted by Fabian Olando saw the Lions take a 7-0 lead before Isaac Adimo reduced the deficit for the Sharks with a penalty to make it 7-3. It was a close first half contest with no further points and the teams went into the interval with the scores remaining the same.
Second half action saw the Lions make a foray into Sharks territory, winning a penalty that Olando drilled home to extend the lead to 10-3 before Edwin Salamba broke for the Sharks, touching down in the corner to bring the scores to 10-8. A late Dennis Ombachi try sealed the game for the Lions, who won their second consecutive group game and booked a semi final berth with one match to spare.

    Pool B
Dimension Data Rwenzori pulled off a 17-15 win over defending champions UAP Rhinos in Kampala, a result that sees them have one foot in the semis while the second Ugandan side in the competition, KCB Victoria, registered a 17-7 away win over hosts Mumias Sugar Buffaloes in Mumias, a result that revives their semi final chances.

    Match Day Two Preview

We are heading into match day two at the tenth edition of the Bamburi Rugby Super Series on Saturday 12 May 2012 and this could be the weekend when semi final berths are secured, teams are eliminated or the competition becomes a lot more difficult courtesy of unpredictable results.

    Action from match day one

Back to the rugby and we again have four fixtures on the cards, two at a changed venue in Nairobi and one each in Mumias and Kampala, Uganda.

Nairobi’s fixtures take place at the Jamhuri Park, a move that has been necessitated by the deterioration of the playing surface at the host venue, the RFUEA Grounds, as a result of the heavy rains that have pounded Nairobi and it’s environs. The fixture in Mumias takes place at the Mumias Sports Complex while Kampala’s fixture takes place at the Kampala RUFC grounds.

We get down to the weekend preview.

    BRSS Saturday 12 May 2012.

POOL A:SDV TRANSAMI CHEETAHS v COASTAL BULLS

    2.00pm, JAMHURI PARK

    LIVE ON DSTV

The SDV Transami Cheetahs will be up against the visiting Coastal Bulls in the 2.00pm kick off. The Cheetahs left it late against the Nguvu Sharks last weekend, a try at the death sealing an 11-7 win. Captain Duncan Ekasi, speaking after the match, observed that his side’s mental strength gave them the belief to overturn the 3-7 and 6-7 deficits that they faced last weekend and he will surely rally his troops to put in another strong performance as they seek to book their semi final berth with a game to spare. Key for the Cheetahs will be big Lawi Buyachi, the Kenya number eight who has been in imperious form, scoring three tries in his last three outings for franchise and country. He will definitely be a handful for the Coastal Bulls backrow. Kenya winger Vincent Mose and Oscar Ayodi will also be players to watch out for on the Cheetahs side.

The Bulls started their campaign with a 6-45 home loss to the Lions at the Mombasa Sports Club. It is interesting to note that they camped in their opponents’ half for the better part of the opening half, unable to translate possession into points. They actually took the game to the Lions, particularly in the forwards, and were only let down by fly half Steve Matioli who had an off day. Anyway, back to the present, or the foreseeable future, the Bulls face the Cheetahs in their first ever BRSS match outside their home venue and this presents them with a chance to get their campaign back on track. With players like Matioli who has the ability to unlock any defence when he shows up for the party, Malik Ndemi and Paul Oimbo in their ranks, the Bulls are in it to win it.

POOL A: LIONS v NGUVU SHARKS

    4.00pm, JAMHURI PARK

    LIVE ON DSTV

After their 45-6 away win over the Coastal Bulls on match day one, the Lions, champions in 2008, renew their rivalry with the Nguvu Sharks who beat them 32-25, a result that contributed to the Lions failure to reach the semi finals for the first time in their history. The Lions, coached by Fijian Meli Tuni Wainibuli, know the task ahead of them, sealing a win against the Sharks which would see them with a foot in the semis. With the likes of Collins Injera, Oliver Mang’eni, Peter Mutai, Dan Sikuta and Dennis Mwanja in their ranks, they will surely fancy their chances .

Paul Odera’s Nguvu Sharks were unlucky to fall 7-11 to the Cheetahs at the RFUEA on match day one, this after leading for close to seventy three minutes. They must bounce back with victory against the Lions as another loss will surely see the 2011 semi finals bow out with a match to spare. Kenya fly half Isaac Adimo, captaining the Sharks, observed that his side were unlucky to lose to the Cheetahs but noted that the result was cast in stone and their focus was fully on the next match against the Lions. Tony Onyango, who scored on his Kenya debut during the 12-0 win over Uganda, was voted man of the match against the Cheetahs and will be one of the Sharks players to watch on the day. Others include Kenny Andola and Edwin Salamba, who scored the only try against the Cheetahs.

POOL B: MUMIAS SUGAR BUFFALOES v KCB VICTORIA

    4.00pm, MUMIAS SPORTS COMPLEX

Former Kenya prop Arthur Shikwe’s Mumias Sugar Buffaloes head into this fixture with their heads held high. They gave Dimension Data Rwenzori the jitters even though their late rally did not secure a win in Kampala as they lost 43-31 to their hosts. Scoring four tries on the road has surely given the Buffaloes hope. They host KCB Victoria at the Mumias Sports Complex in Mumias, knowing that only a win will see them stay in contention for a semi final berth. With hat trick hero Bramwel Shikanda in their ranks and Jaycox Mwavali in their ranks, the Buffaloes will be out to make use of their home ground advantage and eliminate the Ugandans from the competition.

KCB Victoria, one of two Ugandan sides taking part in the BRSS hit the road once more, making the sortie to Mumias, this coming off their 46-9 defeat at the hands of defending champions, UAP Rhinos in Nairobi last weekend. This match is do or die for the Ugandans, they too must win to stay in contention. With mercurial captain Faisal Gamma and teenager Philip Wokorach in their ranks, Victoria too cannot be written off. Fans in Mumias will be in for a real rugby treat.

POOL B: DIMENSION DATA RWENZORI v UAP RHINOS

    430pm, KAMPALA RUFC GROUNDS

Dimension Data Rwenzori come head to head with defending champions UAP Rhinos in a match that will determine who goes top of pool B and effectively books themselves a semi final berth. Rwenzori ran off with a 43-31win over the Buffaloes, getting this result after surviving a late rally from the visitors. They will need to be in this tie against the Rhinos for the entire eighty minutes. Steve Ogwete, Anthony Kinene and Justin Kimono who has six tries in six career BRSS appearances will be key for the home side.

The UAP Rhinos were authoritative in their 46-9 win over KCB Victoria on an atrocious RFUEA pitch, what can they do on the better turf at the Kampala RUFC grounds? A win secures a semi final berth for the five time winners of the event and they head into Kampala having never lost to Rwenzori in a BRSS encounter. Captain Sammy Warui said his team is maintaining its focus as they take every game at a time. Coach Eric Situma will rely on Eden Agero, Brian Nyikuli and Dennis Muhanji to swing the game his way. Kampala fans will be in for an entertaining match.
