Rhinos retain BRSS title with win over Rwenzori

The UAP Rhinos re-wrote the history books, beating Dimension Data Rwenzori 25-14 to lift their sixth overall Bamburi Rugby Super Series title in an entertaining final played before a capacity crowd at Nairobi’s RFUEA Grounds on Saturday 2 June 2012.

The first Ugandan side to reach the championship match, Rwenzori were quick off the blocks, taking the game to the Rhinos, dominating the early exchanges. They were particularly rampant in the rucks and mauls, forcing consecutive infringements from the defending champions that were penalized by center referee Andre Karani. Anthony Kinene’s first goal attempt from a penalty would bounce off the sticks, his second would sail just wide as the match remained scoreless.

The Rhinos would surge forward as they kept possession for the first time in this encounter, winning a penalty on the Rwenzori 22′. Eden Agero, going for goal, struck his kick between the sticks, giving the Rhinos a 3-0 lead. This would give them the attacking impetus, but they failed to translate this possession into points, twice let down by non delivery from Agero to Leslie Libasia and a Nick Baraza fumble with acres of space in front of him.

With Rwenzori back in possession, center Paul Kabazi would break from his 25′, carrying the ball 40 meters before offloading to his support player, Edmund Tumusiime who released Justin Kimono with a pass that saw the 2011 BRSS top try scorer ground the ball under the posts, Kinene converting to give Rwenzori a 7-3 lead. They kept pressing forward, winning a line out ball and mauling on the Rhinos 22′ but making nothing of this attack as the Rhinos defended well.

Rhinos would come back strongly, entering Rwenzori territory after Agero booted the ball into touch from a penalty inside their own half. Retaining possession from the line out, Rhinos would maul on the Rwenzori 5′, their forward charge halted when referee Karani called an infringement, awarding Rhinos the put in for the ensuing scrummage. Maintaining their forward push, backrow man Tony Mutai grounded the ball with Agero converting to see the Rhinos retake the lead, the electronic score board reading 10-7 in their favor.

The rest of this half would be a close contest, the most significant incident happening minutes to half time when Tumusiime’s drop goal attempt for Rwenzori sailed wide with the buzzer sounding for half time.

Rwenzori started the second half with plenty of zeal, retaining possession in the opening minutes. Wing Felix Lubega would find himself in possession, beating the gain line, brushing off three tackles before being stopped agonizingly short of the Rhinos try line. They maintained this momentum but Marvin Odong was held up on the try line minutes later. Their pressure eventually paid off when Timothy Dumba grounded the ball, Kinene’s conversion taking the scores to 14-10.They would miss an opportunity to stretch this lead when Odong’ failed to gather a loose ball with his path to the try line clear.

The Rhinos finally sprung into life, the introduction of Wilson Kopondo for Joseph Kangethe paying dividends, when first, Dennis Muhanji went over the try line, his unconverted try awarded courtesy of a TMO decision taking the scores to 15-14 before Kopondo went over, his tournament leading fifth try giving Rhinos a 20-14.

Rwenzori winger Kimono would have difficulty fielding Agero’s territorial kick with Rhinos center Nick Baraza showing the presence of mind to chase what seemed to be a worthless cause, gathering the ball from Kimono’s fumble, playing in his support player Muhanji who released Victor Sudi who touched down in the corner, his unconverted try all but securing the win for the Rhinos.

The buzzer would sound minutes later with Andre Karani blowing his whistle to signal full time. The Rhinos had retained the title, their sixth overall title and their fourth in a row since 2009.

Indeed, the record books had been re-written,the Rhinos become the first team to win the title four times in a row. For Victor Sudi, it was a personal milestone too, the most decorated player in BRSS history now with seven titles to his name.

Speaking after the win, Rhinos captain Joel Ng’ang’a paid tribute to his charges, saying, “It was a team effort. We kept our heads up, we sayed focused and fought to the very end.”

It was further joy for the Rhinos as Wilson Kopondo, who emerged as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, also came out as the tournament’s top try scorer, ending the event with five tries, one ahead of Steve Ogwete, Marvin Odong (Rwenzori), Vincent Mose (Cheetahs) and Bram Shikanda (Buffaloes).

Rwenzori captain Solomon Mawanda rued his side’s lost chances saying, “We had the game, we lost it in the break downs, and these are lessons learnt. We congratulate the Rhinos, they were worthy winners in what was a very good game of rugby.”

The third place playoff match saw the SDV Transami Cheetahs rally from 12-18 to register a 22-18 win over the Lions. The Lions went ahead through an unconverted Curtis Lilako try before Tony Nyandigisi levelled for the Cheetahs. Ian Indimuli and Fabian Olando added a try and penalty each before Ronnie Mwenesi scored against his former side, Moses Kola converting to take the scores to 13-12 at half time. Peter Mutai would stretch the Lions lead with a second half try before Mwenesi and Vincent Mose’s tries sealed the win for the Cheetahs.

Lions player Olando was crowned the Bamburi Rugby Super Series top points scorer, ending the tournament with 46 points, nine ahead of second placed Mose on 37 points.

The Rhinos will look to the experience of captain Joel Ng’ang’a, who has been part of all their five previous championship winning teams in 2003,2007,2009,2010 and 2011 and Victor Sudi, gunning for his fifth crown in a Rhinos jersey and seventh overall Bamburi Rugby Super Series crown.

Dimension Data Rwenzori, the first Ugandan side to reach the final will be without the dependable Romano Ogwal, out with a finger injury but have still included Marvin Odong and Steve Ogwete who have landed eight tries between them during this campaign.

History in the making as Rhinos, Rwenzori meet in final

Saturday 2 June 2012 sees the curtains fall on the 10th edition of the Bamburi Rugby Super Series. Even before center referee Andre Karani blows his whistle at 4.00pm to kick off the championship match between defending champions UAP Rhinos and first time finalists Dimension Data Rwenzori, history has already been re-written. The UAP Rhinos, already the most successful side in the tournament’s history, continue to set standards, this time round, qualifying for a sixth straight final since 2007. They head into Saturday’s match looking to claim a sixth overall title, and a fourth in succession since 2009.

As mentioned earlier, history has already been re-written, and Uganda’s Dimension Data Rwenzori are part of the equation. They played against the Mumias Sugar Buffaloes in the first ever Bamburi Rugby Super Series match to be televised live from Uganda, they also played in the first ever tournament semi final to be played outside Nairobi and are the first ever Ugandan side to reach the Bamburi Rugby Super Series championship match, popularly refered to as the final. Can they become the first Ugandan side to lift the title?

Well, Rwenzori are taking nothing to chance, opting to take the 45 minute flight to Nairobi, foregoing the +10 hour bus ride from Kampala as they seek to be fresh, avoid the effects of bus lag (if there exists such a term) and take the fight to the defending champions Rhinos. They will rely on among others, Anthony Kinene, Steve Ogwete, Marvin Odongo to lead their quest for glory.

Their opponents on Saturday, the UAP Rhinos are certainly no slouches. They have shown their pedigree by wriggling out of tricky situations to carry the day, case in point, the 25-18 match day three win over the Mumias Sugar Buffaloes where they threw away a 10-0 lead, trailed 15-18 before regrouping to win that fixture 25-18. They would again show their grit when, after racing to a 15-5 lead against the Lions in last weekend’s semi final in Nairobi, they found themselves trailing 15-19 with precious little left on the ticker before Wilson Kopondo’s try and their steely resolve saw them knick that match 20-19, securing passage to the final.

This match is no doubt bound to be filled with all the thrills and spills worthy of a final. There is so much to play for other than the title. For the Rhinos, it is an opportunity to avenge the 17-15 loss to Rwenzori on match day two in Kampala while the Ugandans be out to prove that their win against the Rhinos was not a fluke.

This match will be preceded by the third and fourth playoff match between the Lions and SDV Transami Cheetahs from 1.30pm.

It’s a Kenya-Uganda final as Rhinos and Rwenzori win their semis

Dimension Data Rwenzori became the first Ugandan side to make it to a Super series final after they saw off the SDV Transami Cheetahs 25-0 at the Kampala Rugby Club. In Nairobi the UAP Rhinos made it six finals in a row when they edged out the Lions 20-19 in a close match at the RFUEA grounds.

In Kampala,Dimension Data Rwenzori confidently saw off the SDV Transami Cheetahs 25-0 to book a final spot for the first time,Rwenzori took the lead through a Marvin Odongo unconverted try, the Ugandan side taking this lead into the half time break. Anthony Kinene extended Rwenzori’s lead to 8-0 from a penalty, after this the Cheetahs tried to get back into it with the Rwenzori doing well to hold them out. The Rwenzori would further stretch that lead via an Edmund Tumusiime drop goal to make it 11-0, the Cheetahs would again try to get back in the game again falling short. The Rwenzori would seal this game through an Edmund Tumusiime try and a Kinene conversion to make it 18-0, they went further ahead via a converted try by Kamanyire confirmed by the TMO. Making the final score 25-0.

In Nairobi the epic encounter between the Lions and UAP Rhinos lived up to expectation at the RFUEA, despite the light showers at the beginning of the game. It was the Lions who showed more intent in the early exchanges, this dominance winning the Lions a penalty which Fabian Olando missed from. The Lions continued dominating though it was the Rhinos whon scored first after putting together a counter attack, Brian Nyikuli finishing off the move. The resulting conversion missed by Agero, the Lions who had dominated to this point continued to probe the Rhinos line but just falling short. Their persistence finally paid off, Edwin Machanje grounding the ball to level the scores 5 all.The Lions would again pick up from where they left from with several phases at the forwards, the Rhinos again resolute in defence. The Rhinos would win a penalty inside the Lions’ half opting to go for touch, and finding it through Eden Agero. They would win the resulting line out to set up a maul which they succesfully drove to the line owing to their weight advantage in the forwards. The referee would however call the first of several TMO decions to confirm the try, with the TMO seeing no reason not to award the try, the Rhinos retook the lead 10-5. With this score the Rhinos started turning the tables on the Lions, taking the game to them, again winning a penalty off one of their ventures into Lions’ territory and kicking for touch. They would again win the resulting penalty and maul off it to ground the ball. The referee again calling for the TMO to confirm the try, which he duely did to take the scores to 15-5 to the Rhinos. With the half winding down, the Lions would win 3 consecutive penalties, Olando hitting the upright from one and scoring from the two to make the half time scores 11-15 to the Rhinos.

The second half started in similar fashion to the first, with the Lions dominating possesion and territory, they would win two early penalties from which Fabian Olando managed to miss from both attempts. The Lions would however win another penalty this time Olando making it third time lucky to make it a one point game at 14-15 to the Rhinos. The Rhinos charge would receive a body blow when Fly Half Eden Agero was sent to the sin bin for obstructing play from a qiuck line out. The Lions took full advantage of their numerical advantage to take the lead for the first time in the match through Darwin Mukidza try, to take the scores to 19-15.

The Lions would continue to dominating this period of exchanges with the Rhinos again defending well. With Agero back on the field of play the Rhinos would start to turn things around, again winning a penalty and going for touch. It was a try from the same script as the last two, with the TMO awarding the try to give the Rhinos a one point lead at 20-19. With less than a minute to go the Lions were camped at the Rhinos half looking for the score that will win them the game.

The hooter would sound with the Lions still in possession of the ball just short of the Rhinos 22 meter line, the Rhinos defending with all they had. The Lions patient in attack, setting up play after play from the forwards looking for an opening, this opening came when the Rhinos committed an infringement at the ruck. Lavin Asego going for the drop goal knowing that his side had an advantage, the veteran fly half taking it wide. The ref would bring back play to the point of the penalty, after a short discussion the Lions opted to go for the posts.

It was all on Olando’s shoulders now, the top points scorer this far took his time with the kick just left of the posts between the 22 and 44 meter line. With the Lions’ fans holding their breath, the kick was taken and drifted just wide of the near post. Being the final play of the game the centre referee blew for full time, taking the UAP Rhinos to their fifth consecutive final.

The man of the match from this game was awarded to Edwin Machanje who lead the Lions charge.

With those results, the finalists for the 10th edition of the Bamburi super series are the Dimension Data Rwenzori and the UAP Rhinos. This match will be a replay of the Pool B day two fixture played in Kampala where thew Rwenzori emerged 17-15 winners on the day. The third place play off will also be a replay, this time a Pool A replay between the Lions and the SDV Transami Cheetahs, the Lions were 24-15 winners in that one.

The Semi Final Preview

Twelve matches later and we are down to the final four at the 10th edition of the Bamburi Rugby Super Series. This year, the semi finals adopt a slight different structure. Contrary to previous years where both semi final matches were played at Nairobi’s RFUEA grounds, this year’s edition sees the semi final fixtures evenly spread between Nairobi and Kampala, adding a different twist to what are already intriguing fixtures, at least on paper. The four teams in action this weekend are the Lions, UAP Rhinos, Dimension Data Rwenzori and the SDV Transami Cheetahs.
We begin our preview in Nairobi where the 2008 champions Lions host the defending champions UAP Rhinos at the RFUEA grounds.

Lions v UAP Rhinos
Saturday 26 May 2012
RFUEA Grounds, Nairobi
4.00pm
Gate Charges Ksh 300

The last time these two sides met was in a Pool B fixture on Saturday 14 May 2011 at the Afraha Stadium in Nakuru, the Rhinos beating the Lions 24-19 to book a semi final berth and send the big cats home. The Lions came through Pool A unscathed, finishing top courtesy of wins over the Coastal Bulls, Nguvu Sharks and the SDV Transami Cheetahs. Their reward for their table topping exploits? A semi final match up against the UAP Rhinos. They have been efficient in the run up to the semis, the leadership of Dennis Mwanja and Collins Injera complimented by the goal kicking exploits of Fabian Olando, Lavin Asego’s playmaking skills and Peter Mutai’s control and decision making when distributing ball from the set pieces and breakdowns.

They have managed to score an average of 28 points per game, conceding an average of 10 points per game, which tells a story about their offensive and defensive capabilities. This however is a winner take all scenario, and such situations have in the past proved to be no respecter of statistics. Lions coach Meli Wanibuli welcomes back Joseph Oriwo, Dennis Ombachi and Danny Sikuta who were part of the Kenyan team that reached the Roma Sevens final in Italy but will have to do without back row man Anthony Ogot who starts a one match ban after being cited following an incident during last weekend’s group game against the Cheetahs.
Action from last weekend between the Rhinos and Buffaloes

Last week, for a moment, Erick Situma’s Rhinos, five time winners of the Bamburi Rugby Super Series were on the opposite end of the scoreline against the Mumias Sugar Buffaloes during their final Pool B match at the Nakuru Athletic Club, rallying from an 18-15 score at half time to edge the plucky Buffaloes 25-18 and set up Saturday’s date with the Lions by virtue of finishing second in their pool. Admittedly, the Rhinos, five time champions, were slow off the mark in that one, but it sure served as a wake up call and they definitely take the game to the Lions as they seek to return to the finals for a sixth successive time since 2007. They have managed an average of 27 points per game, conceding an average of 14 points per game.

They will rely on the boot and playmaking of Eden Agero, the versatile half back comfortable playing at either nine or ten, loose forward Brian Nyikuli, Edwin Makori and Victor Sudi to carry them on the day. Dennis Muhanji was taken off during their match against the Buffaloes and is doubtful for this fixture as is scrum half Edwin Achayo.

A few match ups that should light up the match will be the front battle between Joel Ng’ang’a and Moses Amusala, Wilson Kopondo against Danny Sikuta at lock, Dennis Mwanja against Brian Nyikuli at back row, Peter Mutai probably up against Eden Agero or Edwin Achayo at number nine, Victor Sudi versus Collins Injera on the wing.

It goes without saying the fans at the RFUEA grounds have a match on their hands

Dimension Data Rwenzori v SDV Transami Cheetahs
Kampala Rugby Grounds, Kampala, Uganda
4.00pm

Hosts Dimension Data Rwenzori host the SDV Transami Cheetahs in a ground breaking match, ground breaking because this is the first ever BRSS semi final fixture being played outside its traditional venue at Nairobi’s RFUEA grounds. Rwenzori won Pool B with a 100% record, posting wins over the Mumias Sugar Buffaloes, the UAP Rhinos and local rivals KCB Victoria. Playing in Kampala, Rwenzori will not only look to home ground advantage but also the free scoring Steve Ogwete, current joint top try scorer with the Buffaloes Bram Shikanda on four tries, Anthony Kinene, Marvin Odongo and Justin Kimono will also be key for Rwenzori as they seek to go where no Ugandan side has gone by reaching a first ever Bamburi Rugby Super Series final.

The SDV Transami Cheetahs, champions in 2004 and 2006 were second in Pool A behind the Lions, winning two and losing one of their three pool fixtures. They make the journey to Kampala looking to return to a third successive final since 2010. Vincent Mose is their leading try and points scorer and will be key to the side’s success in Kampala. Kenya number eight Lawi Buyachi will also be a vital player for the Cheetahs who will whoever have to do without winger Les Ochieng who is banned for the rest of the tournament after being found guilty of stamping Lions winger Darwin Mukidza last weekend.

As mentioned earlier, Rwenzori will bank on their good run, and home ground advantage as they dream of making the trip to Nairobi to compete for the 2012 Bamburi Rugby Super Series crown but must be wary of the Cheetahs, beaten finalists the past two years. Kampala fans are in for a quality game of rugby.

Semi Final Berths for the UAP Rhinos and Dimension Data Rwenzori.

The final pool matches of the 10th Bamburi super series were played out in Nairobi, Nakuru and Kampala, with two semi final spots up for grabs.

In Pool A, the Nguvu Sharks took on the Coastal Bulls in the early kick off at Nairobi’s Jamuhuri park. Both sides were without a win this far and were looking to end this year’s tournament on a high. It was the Bulls who took the early lead with the first try of the game, after getting the better of the Sharks forwards in their first attack, Rogers Lai succesfully converting to make it 7-0 to the Bulls. The Sharks would respond immediately via a Hastings Nyariki try and Andola’s conversion to bring the scores to 7 all. The Bulls who were chasing their first victory in their Super series history would retake the lead through an Alex Ndong try and a conversion off Lai’s boot to make it 14-7. Lai would further stretch his team’s advantage to 17-7 from a penalty. The Nguvu Sharks who had dominated much of the game this far, found themselves trailing by 10 points with 10 minutes to the half time whistle. They stepped it up a notch and scored through Edwin Salamba after a great counter attack run from Daniel Mubea, Andola converting to narrow the gap to 3 points at 14-17. With the last play of the Half, the Sharks won a penalty and opted to take a quick restart, Cyprian Kuto catching the Bulls defence on the back foot to make the try that gave the Sharks the lead for the first time in this match. The resulting conversion from Andola hit the upright to take the scores to 19-17 at the break.

The second half saw the Sharks turning their dominance into points as they scored 4 tries un answered tries to take the final score to 43-17. The Nguvu Sharks thus finish 3rd in Pool A, with the Coastal Bulls having to wait another year to register their first victory. The man of the match trophy from this one awarded to Cyprian Kuto of the Nguvu Sharks.

At the Nakuru Athletic Club, defending champions UAP Rhinos survived an early scare against the Mumias Sugar Buffaloes to book a semi final berth in what was an exciting Pool B encounter. The Rhinos had taken the early lead via an Eden Agero penalty and a converted Dennis Muhanji try to bring the scores to 10-0 in their favour, before the Buffaloes turned the tables on them. Two George Oduor penalties and two quick tries by Cyrus Kuya and Bram Shikanda, saw the Buffaloes taking the lead with the scores at 18-10, George Oduor converting one of those tries. The Rhinos would reduce the deficit to three points with Wilson Kopondo making his first try of the game to take the game to the break at 18-15 to the Buffaloes.

Kopondo would get his second of the game in the second half as the Rhinos retook the lead 20-18, Victor Sudi earning his side the bonus point with the fourth try for the Rhinos to make the final score 25-18 to the UAP Rhinos. The Buffaloes who had shown great promise this year are yet to win a match in their short history.

At the Kyadondo Rugby Club in Kampala the other Pool B match between the Dimension Data Rwenzori and the KCB Victoria was a tight affair though the wet conditions had a heavy impact on the game. The last time these two met in last year’s edition the Rwenzori were narrow 11-8 victors, and it was this result that they were looking to repeat. It was a low scoring first half was with both sides guilty of missing clear cut opportunities, with little separating the two. The scores stood at 3 all at the half time break.

The game opened up in the second half with both sides taking their chances but it was the Rwenzori who were the better of the two sides taking the lead at 6-3 before seeing off the game 19-10 at the final whistle. With this win the Dimension Data Rwenzori finish top in Pool B, booking a semi final spot for the second year in a row, the KCB Victoria finish third.

The second Pool A match at the Jamuhuri park was the epic battle between last year’s finalists the SDV Transami Cheetahs and 2008 winners the Lions. Both sides had already done enough to book semi finals spots and were playing to determine who would qualify top of the pool.

It was the Lions who looked the hungrier of the two sides when the game kicked off, immediately dominating the early exchanges of the match. This dominance would pay instant dividend for the Lions winning a penalty through which Fabian Olando kicked in his first points to give the Lions a 3-0 lead. The Cheetahs would get back into the game winning a penalty of their own, Vincent Mose leveling the scores at 3 all. It was a see saw affair from this point as the Cheetahs looked to be on the ascendancy, the Lions doing well to contain the pressure. It was however the Lions who would make the next score, a try by their lethal winger Collins Injera after the Lions had put together a decent counter attack move, Olando making no mistake from the conversion to make it 10-3. The Cheetahs would again level the scores when Vincent Mose was released at the wing to score the try at the corner and successfully convert to bring the scores to 10 all. The Lions forwards were having the upper hand in the game so far, led by captain Dennis Mwanja. This pressure at the forwards forced an infringement at a set piece the Lions opting to go for posts with Olando making it 3 from 3 to give his side a 13-10 lead. Minutes later it was the Lions forwards again causing all the havoc with Dennis Mwanja grounding the ball but the TMO failing to award the try. With the half winding down the Lions had one more scoring opportunity, winning a penalty 40 or so meters out, Olando again making the points for his team to take the game to the half time break at 16-10 to the Lions.

The second half kicked off in similar fashion to the first, with the Lions dominating the play and scoring early via a Fabian Olando penalty to take the scores to 19-10. The Lions failed to stretch their lead further, after a great break by Collins Injera whose pass to Fabian Olando was adjudged to travel forward. The Cheetahs would also fail in an attempt to narrow the gap from a Vincent Mose penalty, scores remaining 19-10 to the Lions. The Lions forwards were at it again, putting together several phases ending up again with Dennis Mwanja grounding the ball, the ref again calling for a TMO who saw no reason not to award the try this time, taking the scores to 24-10 to the Lions after Olando missed his first kick of the day. The Cheetahs looked to quickly get back in the game with the time also winding down as fast. It was the Lions who would fail to extend their lead from an Olando penalty. The Cheetahs threw everything in attack after this, looking to get back in it. This pressure paid off for the Cheetahs with Mose scoring his second of the day at the corner but this time failing to convert to take the scores at the full time whistle to SDV Transami Cheetahs 15-24 Lions. The Man of the match from this one, awarded to Edwin Machanje of the Lions.

Match Day Three Preview

Match Day three at the 10th edition of the Bamburi Rugby Super Series takes place on Saturday 19 May 2012 with four matches on the cards. There will be two Pool A fixtures at Nairobi’s Jamhuri Park, and two other Pool B fixtures in the Kenyan Central Rift Valley town of Nakuru and the Ugandan captial Kampala.

Action from match day two

We start our BRSS match day three preview in Nairobi.

The already eliminated duo of Nguvu Sharks and the Coastal Bulls face off in the day’s opening fixture at the Jamhuri Park from 2.00pm, East African Time. The Nguvu Sharks 2012 campaign came to a halt when they succumbed to a second straight loss to the Lions on match day two, the 15-8 result meaning Paul Odera’s charges would not be returning to the semi finals.

The Sharks will come into this fixture playing for pride, looking to end their 2012 Bamburi Rugby Super Series campaign on a high. For the Coastal Bulls, their sophomore campaign has seen them grow in leaps and bounds. While they are yet to win a BRSS match to date, the experience they have picked up is nothing short of valuable. Bearing that in mind, they will definitely come all out against the Sharks, hoping to pull off a favorable result.

The already qualified duo of the SDV Transami Cheetahs and the Lions meet in the 4.00pm kick off at Jamhuri Park. Having won their opening two matches against the Bulls and Sharks in particular order, and creating an unassailable lead between them and the rest of the pack,it is a given that both teams have made it to the BRSS semi finals but this doesn’t water down the significance of this tie. Qualifying top of Pool A will be key for both sides, and this is very likely to influence team selection with either side’s technical bench putting out their strongest available sides. This should be an closely contested encounter, the team that emerges victorious here is a sure bet to make it all the way to the championship match on Saturday 2 June 2012 at the RFUEA grounds.

Shifting our focus to Pool B and the top of the bill clash is what is being refered to in Uganda as ” the BRSS true clash of the titans” pitting KCB Victoria against Dimension Data Rwenzori at the Kyadondo Rugby grounds from 4.00pm East African Time. Victoria bounced back from their match day one 46-9 defeat to the UAP Rhinos in Nairobi by registering a 17-7 away win over the Mumias Sugar Buffaloes in Mumias on match day two. With their noses scenting a semi final berth, Herbert Wafula’s will leave nothing to chance against fierce rivals Rwenzori. Faisal Gamma and youngster Philip Wokorach will be some of the players to watch on the Victoria side.

Fresh from breaking the UAP Rhinos three year, 16 match unbeaten BRSS run with that 17-15 win on match day two,Dimension Data Rwenzori could statistically have done everything to book their semi final berth, but they would probably have to wary of the phrase, “it ain’t over till its over.” A whole combination of factors could see them not make it beyond the group stages. Bearing this in mind, they should come full throttle against their countrymen, looking to not only retain local bragging rights for the next twelve months but most importantly earn the chance to play their semi final encounter at home and the only way to achieve this is by, you guessed it, beating Victoria.

Steve Ogwete has been in fine form for Rwenzori, his tournament leading four tries part of the reason his side lead Pool B and he will be expected to replicate this form on Saturday. Justin Kimono, if selected, will make his eighth BRSS appearance since his debut late as he seeks to add to his BRSS career tally of six tries. It will be interesting to see how he does on Saturday, particularly as he seeks to outshine his fellow youngster Philip Wokorach on the Victoria side.

All in all this should be a battle royale.

The last fixture on the day is the 4.30pm Pool B kick off at the Nakuru Athletic Club where hosts and defending champions UAP Rhinos play the visiting Mumias Sugar Buffaloes in the 60th match since the tournament’s inception in 2003. The Rhinos mission in Nakuru is straightforward, registering a win as they seek to earn qualification from Pool B, anything short of this complicates their onward movement and it would take a lot of phone calls, text messages and calculators to collect results from elsewhere and do the math to determine their fate. The Rhinos will be motivated to win and for good reason. They will seek to bounce back from the 17-15 loss to Rwenzori in Kampala, a result that saw them lose a BRSS match for the first time since the 33-9 loss to the Lions in the 2008 final. The champions must reassert themselves

Already out of contention after losing their opening two pool matches, the Buffaloes head to Nakuru looking to play the spoiler. They have shown glimpses of brilliance and will look to burst into life against the Rhinos. They will dig deep for the self belief to pull it off and end their official interest in the BRSS on a high.

In other Bamburi Rugby Super Series news, there will be a CSR activity at the National Spinal Injury Hospital on Sunday 20 May 2012 from 1.00pm. The exercise will entail a visit by members of the BRSS Organizing Committee, tournament sponsors ,players and representatives from the various franchises as well as wellwishers interested in being part of this activity. The second match saw the Lions register a 15-8 win over the Nguvu Sharks. Dennis Mwanja’s early try, converted by Fabian Olando saw the Lions take a 7-0 lead before Isaac Adimo reduced the deficit for the Sharks with a penalty to make it 7-3. It was a close first half contest with no further points and the teams went into the interval with the scores remaining the same.
Second half action saw the Lions make a foray into Sharks territory, winning a penalty that Olando drilled home to extend the lead to 10-3 before Edwin Salamba broke for the Sharks, touching down in the corner to bring the scores to 10-8. A late Dennis Ombachi try sealed the game for the Lions, who won their second consecutive group game and booked a semi final berth with one match to spare.

    Pool B
Dimension Data Rwenzori pulled off a 17-15 win over defending champions UAP Rhinos in Kampala, a result that sees them have one foot in the semis while the second Ugandan side in the competition, KCB Victoria, registered a 17-7 away win over hosts Mumias Sugar Buffaloes in Mumias, a result that revives their semi final chances.
